Phytotech Extracts has invested Rs.12 crore via the self funded route for its new facility to foray into the global markets as a phyto extracts company. The move is in sync with the Union government’s phytopharmaceutical regulation which augments promising opportunities. The production plant will commence operations in August this year. Recently the company has bagged two US patents for Guavarin and Slim’N Aqua Concentrate. One more US patent is expected for Muringai soon.

The ultra-modern manufacturing cGMP facility is being built at Vemagal Industrial Area in Kolar district allotted by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB). It is situated on 1.5 acres with a 4,000 sq. ft built up area for production and utilities. The plant has a processing capacity of 5 tonne per day, spray drying capacity of 650-700 kg/day and blending capacity of 2 tonne.

This facility will be world class amongst the Indian herbal manufacturing plants and is designed to be an FDA auditable facility. It is equipped with an analytical lab and research & development facility too. These expansions also envisage the need to hire scientists, managers, field force among others, V Hariharan, CEO & managing director, Phytotech Extracts told.

Our intent is to become an international phytopharma extracts and formulation company with state-of-the-art technology to develop chiral specific molecules that provide specificity in pharmacological action. The automated manufacturing of herbal extracts and formulations will provide an easy access to stringent global market access. Further the latest equipment will be installed in the quality control department for product and process validation. The facility will implement ISO 14001:2015, 9001:2015, 22000:2005 standards and is cGMP & US FDA compatible, he added.

On the Guavarin Psidium guajava extract, US Patent No. 10,293,013 was granted for the process of extraction of Phytochemicals Guijavarin along with saponins & Polyphenols from Guava leaf extract. The phytochemical is identified as Guijaverin, which also exhibits anti-diabetic activity. The Psidium guajava leaf extract is useful in food and beverage industries and is used in different formulations such as chocolates, capsules, and aqua based supplement drinks.

Slim’N Aqua Concentrate has a Standardized and Triple Salt Stabilized Hydroxycitric Acid from Garcinia cambogia extract for making concentrates and slimming water and their derived product for weight management.

Shortly, the company is expected to receive a US patent for Muringai Moringa oleifera leaf extract standardized for unique phyto-chemicals.

Post these patents, the company will share this information on the various dosage forms manufactured out of these extracts to the end users. Plans are underway to undertake further research on these extracts for novel clinical conditions, he said.

Commenting on the phytopharmaceutical regulations which the herbal and plant medicine sector view as the best thing to have happened, Hariharan noted that while it would be difficult to conduct two successful clinical trials to get a phytopharmaceutical status, yet concerted efforts are on to achieve the same.
