India – Yellow mosaic virus hits soybean crop in Madhya Pradesh; survey initiated for farmer compensation

Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, India, is witnessing a severe outbreak of Yellow Mosaic Virus (YMV) in soybean crops, raising serious concerns over yield losses for farmers. The viral infection has visibly affected crop health and productivity across several villages.
Taking note of the situation, District Collector Aditi Garg has ordered an immediate crop damage survey. Joint teams comprising officials from the Revenue and Agriculture Departments, along with local patwaris, have been deployed to fields to assess the ground reality and document the extent of damage.
Collector Garg stated that the survey will be completed swiftly across all development blocks of the district. The consolidated report will then be submitted to the state government to ensure that affected farmers receive timely financial relief and compensation.
Administration Urges Farmers Not to Panic
The district administration has assured farmers that they will not be left alone in this crisis. Collector Garg appealed to the farming community to remain calm, emphasizing that both the administration and the Agriculture Department are committed to providing full support. Farmers have been encouraged to reach out to their local agriculture office or patwari for assistance and information.
Awareness Campaign on Crop Protection
In parallel, the Agriculture Department has been instructed to intensify outreach programs in affected villages. Agricultural scientists and extension officials are advising farmers on recommended control measures, including the timely application of suitable insecticides and integrated management practices to protect standing crops.
Soybean is one of the most important kharif crops in Madhya Pradesh, India’s leading soybean-producing state. The spread of Yellow Mosaic Virus at this stage of the cropping season could impact not only farmer incomes but also regional oilseed production targets for 2025.
