Facing the El Niño Challenge: Haryana Farmers Turn to High-Tech Regenerative Cotton Farming

As the threat of El Niño-induced weather variability looms over Indian agriculture, progressive cotton farmers in Haryana’s Sirsa district are turning to innovation to secure productivity, profitability and sustainability.
Following the successful establishment of high-tech demonstration farms in Kharian and neighbouring villages on 15 April 2026, cotton growers from Chadiwal and Tejia Khera villages in Sirsa district have now joined the High-Tech Regenerative Cotton Initiative supported by Rasi Seeds, implemented by the South Asia Biotechnology Centre (SABC) and guided technically by ICAR-Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR), Nagpur.
The demonstration plots, sown between 15 April and 30 May 2026, feature the BG-II hybrid RCH 846 and showcase a future-ready cotton production system that integrates:
Solar-powered irrigation systems
Precision drip fertigation
Scientific plant canopy management
Integrated pest, disease and weed management
Efficient water and nutrient use
Climate-smart regenerative farming practices
This pioneering model is rapidly emerging as a beacon of hope for the revival of cotton cultivation in North India, demonstrating how modern technology, renewable energy and scientific crop management can work together to enhance productivity while reducing production risks.
Throughout the season, participating farmers are receiving hands-on technical support covering irrigation scheduling, soil moisture monitoring, fertigation practices and integrated crop protection measures. The initiative aims not only to improve yields but also to build farmer capacity for adopting next-generation sustainable cotton production systems.
As India seeks to strengthen cotton productivity and profitability under the Mission on Cotton Productivity, these farmer-led demonstration plots offer a glimpse into the future of climate-smart and resource-efficient cotton farming.
