Aim of the workshop:
The correct identification of other seeds in a sample is of main importance not only in regard of seed trade requirements and to national regulations.
The aim of the workshop is to provide knowledge about seed identification in a range of species of weeds at both the theoretical and practical level; therefore an introduction is given in:

  • seed morphology in general and
  • the meaning of seed characteristics for systematic classification, thus allowing
  • the identification of family, genus, species step by step
  • finally the participants shall be able to identify by themselves unknown seeds in a systematic way.

Workshop Content:
Lectures and practical training on seed identification of cultivars and weeds by morphological characteristics will be given
About ten important plant families with six species each were selected to train the determination of seeds by the aid of botanical keys
Additionally some severe weeds were chosen from the ISTA Universal List to become familiar with the tools for seed identification
Special regard is given to the Poaceae with species of  Avena, Polygonaceae with Rumex and Caryophyllaceae with Silene
Further lectures deal with the set up of seed collections, use of GRIN as well as internet information and literature
Also the application of ISTA Rules for Purity Test, Determination of Other Seeds by Number including reporting of results will be discussed and demonstrated

Participation Fee:
The number of participants is a minimum of 20, without which the workshop will be cancelled and limited to a maximum of 22 participants.

ISTA Members: 500 EUR

ISTA Non-Members: 750 EUR

Note: The Participation fee will include all literature and supporting material for the workshop, lunches and coffee breaks, workshop dinner and transfer between the workshop venue and hotels (except airport transfer). It does not include accommodation or meals other than those specified.
